"Bjarni, Svardkell step back. Only a desire to care for those weaker than ourselves motivated us to continue in the rain. Our assistance is not desired, to help with the little ones or their loads. And it seems our presence rather than reassurring them causes concern." To the stranger Algared says quietly, "Now lower your weapons, we are not Ibanvaal raiders or Brigands but allies and friends. We sought to offer aid but aid is forced were it is not desired is merely tyranny.Fairwell"

The party will disengage allowing the refugess to go their way and they will begin a trek back to Ygesdram.

[OOC initially posted with a view of trying to move back the return to Ygesdram]

Post by GM I have removed all reference of the journey back to Ygesdram so as to reduce the confusion, I will wait to see what happens here

"I threaten you because you question the honor and intent of one of my companions. As for being far from home, I have no home. The Carrion are no more. I am a man with nothing more to lose. I don't kill women and children, just worthless men who should know their place. I was born of a Wolf from the Sea and sometimes my temper gets the best of me. My name is Svardkell Holg and you would do good to remember it. Spread as many lies and untruths as you wish about me. If not for the intervention of my companion I would turn the rain red with you. Now begone from my sight or defy this honourable man and bring your face to my axe."

The stranger does not lower his weapons "I did nothing of the sort, these people became unsettled when your companion raised his concern for their safety and I reminded them that they were on the Daas road and they were perfectly safe from harm"

"Your companions honour or intent were not questioned merely his choice of words and I might say the same to you!" the stranger continues to stand his ground despite him being outnumbered 6 to 1.

"I would agree you were born of a wolf for your action here do little to bring honour to your clan. I am Rild Daas fourth son of Larl Daas (his name is immediately known to all of clan Daas as a shipwright in Myna) and nephew to Balis Daas, Valhakar of the Daas clan of Myna and cousin to Cunate Valhakar of the Daas clan of Ygesdram."

"I need spread no lies or untruths about what happens here for if your ears were working properly I said the women and children would spread the word of what happened here" then lowering his voice and turning his head quickly towards the woman and children "unless you call them liars and tellers of untruths. You do not impress me Svardkell of clan Holg all I see is a man puffing up before his companions and should you turn the rain red with my blood my clansmen would see you spread eagled upon a table and your lungs cut from your chest and placed for you see with your dying eyes!"

"Now take your friends and my clansmens good advice and leave!" Rild continues to stand his ground despite Barak, Algared and Bjarni stepping forward...

Barak will attempt to position himself between Svardkell and Rild facing towards Svardkell. "Back off" he says. Barak will try to restrain Svardkell if he makes any moves towards the other.

[OoC: I have not read anything here which makes it seem like Algared, Barak or Bjarni is acting in a threating manner to Rild, so I am not sure why he would be standing his ground "despite" of their action - if anything they could be construed to be in support of Rild. Certainly Algared's action of trying to stand between them is not escalation.]

Post by GM I did not state that you were threatening in any way, as the situation developed with Svardkell, Barak, Bjarni and Algared have all moved forward and closer to Rild, each of you does not appear threatening now but Rild does not want to be caught unawares if the situation deteriorates further.

Facing Rild, Algared says. “Just as my misuse of words caused the woman concern, so your words as you attempted to reassure the women were perceived to offer insult. There is nothing else that could malign my honour. And I say there is no insult, merely a poor choice of words.”

I came to help and was motivated as a Daas, only in seeking to assist you to reach your destination without being totally exhausted and worn out in the process. If that is foolishness then I stand accused.”

Turning to include both Rild and Svardkell who still seem ready to come to blows, Algared adds, "Not long ago you were both shield brothers in the defence of Abderhiem, whether you knew it or not. The husbands of these women shared the hardships as you both as have the woman and children.
Will you both now dishonour the memory of your companions and these woman’s husbands So for the sake of honour lower you weapons, as my cousin Barak says ‘no good can come from this’ if you continue.”

Algared offers his hand and says,

“I am sorry that we meet under such a cloud Rild, I am Algared Daas a cousin to Cunate my Valhaker, and a son of Skorri.

My war band were in the rear guard on the withdrawal, we found some who were slower than the main host, they also had lost their menfolk we sought to aid their trip along the trail, it was that same concern which lead us to here."

"Always the shipwrights........I knew there was a reason I didn't like you. You've got stones I'll give you that, but that is all I will give you. Lineages don't scare me."

Svardkell is under control but his eyes tell of the fury that is swimming underneath. He will not back down, but if Barak restrains him and Rild holds his tongue, he will not seek to inflame the conflict any further.

Looking past the bolstering men, Bryndis will make eye contact with the women, roll her eyes and give a little shrug... Men she thinks, sighing to herself.

Speaking from where she stands, Bryndis will address the group. "Rild, gentlewomen. I apologize for my associates aggressive behaviour. Wartime has obviously taken it's grip on our emotions, and drowned out the refinements of civilized society. Our concern for your safety lay not in being waylayed by mauraders or brigands, but the general treacheries of the road. Misdirection, wild animals or an unfortunate fall can delay your travels as surely as an enemy with spear and ill intent."

Looking Rild in the eye, "Rild, you are but one man in a group of women and children traveling in three different directions."
Looking to the women, each in turn, she will continue, "but if the WOMEN are satisfied that they can each reach their own destinations without additional escort, we shall return to Ygesdram and the war effort."

To Algared says "Son of Skorri 'Thightarse' Daas, there is something I would not go bragging about!" Rild still gripping spear and shield refuses to take Algared's hand "none the less Algared, son of Skorri, for now you have chosen wise words and I will take your council and not spill your friends blood"

Then turning to Svardkell, Rild says "Algared has offered me some words of wisdom and now I shall do the same for you. With your company gone it might do you well to change that idea that lineages do not matter, it is not what you know Svardkell, but who you know if you wish to succeed! I have no fear of death for the Greyslayer will take me when he wants me and not before and I see you have little fear of the deep sleep either but if you wish to continue to draw breath then heed my words."

Bryndis wanders about the women checking that they are all ok, she notices that Rild keeps a watchful eye on her as she does so. After checking with each of the women and greeting the children Byrn is happy that they are all ok to continue unaided. After all they are the strong women of Menglana and no woman wants to appear meek lest she marry that sort of husband.

"Rild, you are but one man in a group of women and children traveling in three different directions." says Bryn to Rild, nodding his head in response he replies "Aye, I am, but I am no escort or guard I am merely a travelling companion, travelling the same road at the same time going, for some anyway, in the same direction, nothing more, nothing less"

Still on the outskirts of the small thran and with everyone still standing in the rain the warband turn and head east to return to Ygesdram. Looking back over your shoulder you see the group of refugees split with the larger group heading south while a smaller group head north. Your warband returns east. The breeze picks up and becomes a strong wind as it continues to howl from the north west. The temperature drops with the wind and the clouds shield the warmth of Nolomar from you.

After retracing your steps you continue to move through the rain and growing mud chatting quietly with each other. WIth long pauses of silence the warband heads east the only sounds to be heard are the falling rain striking the muddy road, the footfalls of the warband as their feet land in the thin veil of mud upon the trail and the clinking of metal of metal or the duller thud of metal on wood as your arms and armour clatter with each step you take.

While the wind has continued to howl a gale the rain has become more intermitant the further east you travel. The sky has remain dull and grey with no sign of Nolomar above.

With daylight growing thin the thranaal of Ygesdram comes into view through the veil of rain, knowing you are near to home you increase you pace slightly. Before long you pass the runestone and following the trail you turn north towards the market square. Entering the familiar meadhall you are warmed by a fire and lit by the glow of several whale oil lamps, the familiar smell of the oil permeating the hall. Something else graps your attention immediatly upon entering the hall, the fire crackles and sizzles as fat from a roasting pigs hind leg drips upon the hot coals, the smell of roasting pig struggles under the smell of burning whale oil to find your nostrils.

Seated at a table near the fire you see Jabor, Gelda and Shella all seated eating roast pig and chatting amongst themselves. Jabor stands as you enter "Welcome back my weary travellers! Here dry off and warm yourselves before you get stuck in!" he says pointing to the roasting meat...

Post  Svardkell Holg Mon Apr 23, 2012 3:49 pm

Svardkell has been fuming the whole trip back, the rain doing nothing to calm his heated demeanor.

"If I meet that man again I will tie him to a tree with his own entrails. A true Ivinian should not rely on "who he knows" to succeed in this life. We should make our own destinies with our own blood and effort. Then we wouldn't have weak kings with sons who squabble amongst themselves and kill their own father while their people are dying. Am I wrong in this?"

Svardkell motions for some ale by handing out his drinking horn.

Post  Algared Mon Apr 23, 2012 5:52 pm

On the walk back to Ygesdram, Algared says "Rild is a has a lot to learn about what it means to have honour and earn it. Still it is likely if we leave Daaslund we will not be welcome in Myna, nor will the shipwrights there be likely to offer us aid.

Did you notice that there a couple of Pinda still pulled up on the bank, and the fields have mostly been empty. It maybe if we pooled our wealth we may ber able to acquire a vessel and use it to help bring supplies to better aid the defence and give ourselves freedom from marches. None the less I fear Rild has a lot to learn about honour and Ljarl, but where we to have a vessel that needed repairs we'd have better fortune with shipwrights in Ibanvaal than at Myna."

Upon entering the meadhall the smeels and friendly greeting do much to restore Algared's spirits, he returns the greeting dries and warms himself and after asks "So what do has resulted in this feast tonight Jabor? "

To Svardkell Algared says, "Insult a man and he may endure it, insult his clan and they will band together to seek revenge, regardless to what you say friends and family can matter. You let a pup who wanted to try big name himself goade you and get under your skin. I know it is easy enough to find insult and give it. I have made the mistake myself on several occassions since the spring. Those lessons were hard ones to learn and did little for my standing and Ljarl. Bjarri said something akin to this to me, and it makes good sense, 'Treat everyone with honour, even if you feel they dont deserve it, their action's and words will reveal the truth. Thus it seems to me that a true Ivinian is one who holds to the Ljarl and earns honour through word and deed with both Sarajin and men. Thus it is I hold Cunate in high esteem for I have ever found he acts with honour and seeks to welfare of those who rely on him."

"I am biased in this my friend. I have no family that would acknowledge me. Everything I have I have earned myself. I take offense with men who take what they want or earn their way through their family or clan name. In a perfect world everyone should be treated with respect and honor but I just can't do that anymore, maybe I never could. You and these priests are better men than me, and should never lose that. I mean that as a deep respect to you."

"I am Daas and for better or worse I am a son of Skorri. Rild tried to goade me also, but he said only what everyone says of my father. in return Ask yourself why do I reside here now instead of in my father's house. Simply because he has cast me out.. and like you I am here supplied and sheltered because of Cunate. As for Clan and family, I will gladly call you brother and kin. My friend I do not say we mustn't take offense by those who abuse their position of privledge. but where others watch they will also decide who acts with the greater honour, why do you think my father is disliked by many in Ygesdram? Sometimes we are tarred becasue of the sins of our father's that doesnt excuse us from following the Ljarl if we are true Ivinian's and followers of Sarajin. The woman saw and heard how he insulted and was treated with respec they saw that your righteous anger was returned with threats and boasting, they will decide who earned the greater honour and speak of it in the clanhouses of their kin.

Besides when we meet someone you never know if you will require their services at some point? It is better to at least leave bridges intact than to destory friendships and contacts because you feel they slighted you honour. Rild was right in one thing, the women and children will speak on what they saw and heard and we will all be granted honour or contempt in their eyes. I imagine that within the next few days the events of today will trickle from their thrans. Do you think that Cunate would have sent you to join the warband of his kinsmen if you you and the raven's had not earned honour from your word and deeds? Do not assume there are none that would acknowledge you or offer you aid."

Secondly, whatever happens that Daas host will need feeding so no one will be wasting food unnecessarily in my opinion."

...the rain continues to fall outside and the wind howls a gale outside. Meanwhile the mood in the hall is light as everyone takes their portion of meat while Shella offers everyone a portion of pottage along with a sliver of cheese and a handful of dried fruits. The small ale is quickly consumed before Jabor brings out the mead "If we are to celebrate life then lets make merry!" he say as he unplugs a keg of mead.

With the mead flowing Gelda and Shella return the plates and pots to the kitchen while the men drink. It is not long before the mead is affecting everyone and roars of laughter erupt about the hall as stories are told and retold, soon even the summoned creature that inhabits the river is seen as something to entertain the group.

It is early during the night when Jabor excuses himself and decides to turn in for the night. Following his lead the warband soon make up their sleeping area, stoking the fire to fight the cold night air the warriors turn in for the night. With the sounds of the crackling fire and the glow from its flames shedding an eerie glow about the hall you drift off to sleep out of the rain, wind and cold.
